I'm as concerned as the next person but what was I supposed to do? Stay home with the lights off?

I'm afraid I agree with you... A nice "gesture".. And...good for them!... but in the long run we're gonna need one heck of a lot more sensible and quantifiable scientific collaboration than people feeling good about themselves cos they turned the lights out for a while.
